With the recent release of the new Avengers: Age of Ultron, I thought I would dig out my favorite Marvel Super Heroes RPG and give one of my Favorite characters a little update to coincide with his big screen incarnation. I grew up playing the “Classic Marvel RPG” from TSR back in the 80’s and it was a big part of my Role Playing experience as a teenager ( I think I played it more than Dungeons and Dragons in fact ). Although the game has undergone numerous revisions and releases, the original rule set is one that still resonates the most with me, mainly due to its comic book inspired systems and overall flavor.
Here is a “Movie Inspired” take on everyone’s favorite star spangled Avenger.
Name: Captain America
Civilian Identity: Public (Steve Rogers)
Strength: Excellent (20)
Endurance: Remarkable (30)
Reason: Good (10)
Intuition: Incredible (40)
Psyche: Good (10)
Resources: Personal ( EX20)
Caps Chief weapon is made out of a substance called Vibranium. This shield was presented to him by none other than Howard Stark during his World War 2 exploits. The Vibranium used in its creation was smuggled out of the country of Wakanda and was believed to be the last remnants of the amazing material. The shield is Class 3000 material and immune to any harm save for magic or psionics. Captain America uses this weapon as a shield but is still subject to Slams and Stuns while using it. Captain America may throw his shield inflicting Remarkable(30) damage. One of Cap’s established power stunts is to bounce the shield off of a number of hard surfaces and have it return to him the following round. The latest improvement to Cap’s uniform incorporates a magnetic gauntlet that allows him to retrieve the shield in a more fluid and reliable fashion. If
If Cap is ever separated from his shield for any reason and as long as the shield is not detained he can make a RM(30) feat to ” summon” it to his arm.
When Cap struck out to rescue the Army’s soldiers from the Red Skulls clutches back in World War 2 he had nothing more than a leather jacket and his USO ” stars and stripes” outfit. Having proven himself to be the Hero he was meant to be the Army outfitted him with a more functional outfit that served as a tactical uniform as well as giving him protection. When Steve awoke from his suspended animation and begun working with Shield he received a few different updates to the design of his armor. At one point he wore a very toned down ” Shield esque” suit of body armor but after the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D itself he returned to the more familiar ” Stars and Stripes” he is known to wear. Regardless of the style Cap is sporting all his suits bestow him with Excellent(20) protection against Blunt/Edged damage types.
Ever since his World War 2 days Steve has had a passion for motorcycles and even went so far as to incorporate them into his fighting style. While not having any weapons or armaments on its own Cap can literally turn any bike into a mobile fighting platform. His Avengers Bike currently is his favorite and is a modified Harley Davidson with the following stats.
Control: Good Speed: Remarkable Body: Good Protection: None
Captain America is the worlds finest fighter and a weapon specialist in his unique weapon of choice ( His Shield) receiving a +2CS in FEATS using it. He is skilled in all Martial Arts types ( A-E) as well as Leadership, Artist, and Military talents.
Cap is a vital member of the Avengers and close friends with Nick Fury , the once head of Shield operations. In addition to his super hero companions Cap has close ties to the US Army and is regarded as a national Hero. While being such a public figure and a hero of the ages Cap can pretty much call on the aid of anyone in America and they would do everything in their power to accommodate him. If a player needs anything within reason he/she can make an Unearthly(100) feat check to get what he needs.
“The price of freedom is high, always has been and it’s a price I’m willing to pay! If I’m the only one, so be it. But I’m willing to bet I’m not.”
Captain Steven “Steve” Grant Rogers is the only living, successful test subject of the Super Soldier Serum developed by Abraham Erskine during the Second World War. The patriotic super soldier was given the title of Captain America and fought against the Nazis and their associated terror group HYDRA. Rogers was frozen for nearly seventy years and awoke in the twenty-first century, where he joined the Avengers as their team leader. After the Battle of New York, Rogers became a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. He went on many covert missions with agent Natasha Romanoff and S.H.I.E.L.D. counter-terrorism team, Strike. Both Rogers and Romanoff discover that HYDRA has secretly operated within S.H.I.E.L.D. for decades. Rogers, with the help of Sam Wilson was able to destroy HYDRA’s Insight Helicarriers for Project Insight. The Avengers reassembled to find Loki’s Scepter.
Rogers is in a unique class by himself. While there are various elements to him that still make him human, the serum has enabled him to be more than human. Overall, Rogers possesses remarkable strength, speed, agility, stamina/endurance, reflexes, durability and extraordinary regenerative capabilities. In addition, he is a highly trained operative, trained in various forms of hand-to-hand combat, weaponry and other skills due to his experience during WWII and the Battle of New York, makes him formidable in battle. Despite his vitals being slowed, his old age and his having been frozen for almost seventy years, he is still in impressive physical condition.
If you can still get a hold of the Classic Marvel RPG rules I highly recommend it as the game still holds up against modern iterations of the Super Hero genre. I am going to leave you with a final clip from Captain America: The Winter Soldier which I think is the most Bad Ass display of fighting from Captain America ever!
